Oktoberfest has 17 large tents and over a dozen smaller specialty tents. They are not interchangeable. Each has a distinct crowd, atmosphere, and reservation situation.
Hofbräu-Festzelt. Capacity 10,000. The most internationally known tent. Expect a younger, internationl crowd and the loudest atmosphere of any tent on the grounds. Standing room is available daily; the interior runs out of seats by late morning on weekends. This tent fills first and has the most aggressive walk-in competition. If you want a table reservation, Hofbräu fills its reservation spots within hours of opening the reservation window.
Augustiner-Festhalle. Capacity 6,000. Considered the locals' choice. Augustiner beer is the oldest of the Oktoberfest breweries, founded in 1328. The tent draws Münchners who want a traditional atmosphere over the international party scene. Beer is served from wooden barrels (Holzfässer) rather than stainless kegs, a distinction regular visitors care about. Reservations required for evening slots; lunch tables are sometimes available as walk-ins on weekdays.
Schottenhamel. Traditionally the tent where Oktoberfest opens: the Mayor of Munich taps the first keg here on the opening Saturday. Popular with younger Germans. Music tends toward louder sing-along pop on evenings. Daytime atmosphere is more traditional.
Smaller tents. Bräurosl and Hacker-Festzelt have lower international profile but easier walk-in seating, particularly on weekday afternoons. Oide Wiesn (Old Oktoberfest) is a heritage section on the festival grounds with quieter, more traditional music and older crowds. It charges a separate entry fee (around €4) and is one of the few areas where you can have a conversation at normal volume. Munich hotels near Oktoberfest on CuddlyNest from €89/night.
Oktoberfest 2026 runs from Saturday September 19 to Sunday October 4. The festival traditionally opens on the third Saturday of September and runs through the first Sunday in October. The festival started as a wedding celebration for Crown Prince Ludwig in October 1810 and has moved progressively earlier as weather data showed September provides more reliable sun.
Beer prices in 2025 and what to expect in 2026. A Masskrug (1-litre glass) cost €15.30 to €16.10 in 2025 depending on the tent. Prices increase each year. Budget at least €17-18 per Masskrug for 2026 as an estimate. A Mass at Oktoberfest is not a pint and not a half-pint; it is a full litre. Pace accordingly. Servers work on commission, not hourly wage, and carry 10-12 Masskrüge at once. Tipping €1-2 per round is expected, not optional.
What to wear. Wearing traditional Bavarian Trachten (dirndl for women, Lederhosen for men) is normal at Oktoberfest and welcome. Renting or buying cheap costumes from tourist shops near the main station produces noticeably poor quality and is a reliable marker of first-time visitors. If you want traditional attire, buy from Bavarian specialist retailers like Angermaier Trachten in Munich city centre. Lederhosen cost €100-300 for decent leather; dirndl start at €80 for cotton versions. The investment lasts many festivals. Generic "Halloween costume" versions do not.
What has changed. Since 2022, Oktoberfest requires QR code entry tickets for the tents in the evenings and on weekends. Walk-in is still possible in the morning on weekdays. The festival grounds are cashless in several areas; carry a card as well as cash. Munich accommodation near the Theresienwiese on CuddlyNest from €89/night.
