Abdurrahman Ibn Sulaiman, the Emir of Riyadh, completed the fort during Muhammad Bin Abdullah Al Rashid&#8217;s reign in 1895.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Arabia, the word &#8220;Masmak&#8221; refers to a large, fortified structure with massive walls that protect the city and its supplies from invading armies. Emir Abdulaziz Ibn Saud Al Saud, the head of the Saud family, arrived in Riyadh in January 1902 and defeated the House of Rasheed&#8217;s fortress in the Battle of Riyadh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visitors enter the fort from an open plaza through a palm tree gate that is 12 high by about 9 feet wide. The door has a protective element called al-Khokha, which is an opening just large enough to let one person pass at a time. The fort functions well and has a variety of historical artifacts inside it, including weapons from the assault. It is 10 cm (3.94 in) thick and made of palmwood.
