Minturno is a typical medieval old town, as it is found in the south of Italy: small winding lanes and staircases, archways, flowers and old churches. The city lies at the foot of the gigantic Aurunci Mountains and is built on a hill that rises above the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Worth seeing are the medieval churches of San Pietro, Santissima Annunziata and San Francesco and of course the medieval castle. During the Christmas season there is a Christmas market with arts and crafts and a nativity scene exhibition in the castle.
In order to get in contact with the village for the first time, we recommend a short tour through the alleys of the old town, along the old main street and then to the right following the somewhat dark archways of the old city wall.
The remains of the ancient Minturnae are located on the legendary Via Appia near the Garigliano River. The origins of the ancient Minturnae go back to the Aurunci population. In the year 340 BC. these were defeated by the Romans. Today, you can admire the remains of the ancient Roman Minturnae and the amphitheater, which hosts cultural events such as theater, music and dancing during the summer. In a small museum filled with with statues, inscriptions and objects such as tools or vases, visitors can see the findings of the excavations.
In the green hills around Minturno are the small medieval districts Tremensuoli, Santa Maria Infante, Pulcherini and Tufo. Next to sea you find the tourist districts Scauri and Marina di Minturno.
A wide variety of restaurants - from the simple pizzeria to typical restaurants with good local cuisine to gourmet restaurants - and pubs can be found in Scauri and the surrounding area. Evenings with live music are often held at the, Scoglio and the Mary Rock pub. Mary Rock, is located in a romantic bay just above the water, it is an open-air restaurant and only open during the summer months.
