About Santa Cruz Province

Santa Cruz is a province of Argentina which is located in the southern section of the country which is situated in Patagonia. It shares borders with Chubut Province towards the north and Chile towards the west. In the south province of Santa Cruz is hugged by the Atlantic Ocean. It is the largest province in Argentina after the province of Buenos Aires. Santa Cruz also happens to be the most sparsely populated in mainland of the country. The indigenous population of the province of Santa Cruz is called the Tehuelches.  There was considerable European exploration since the 16th century but they managed to stay independent until the close of the 19th century. When the Conquest of the Desert occurred during the 1870s, this territory area was named the Territory of Santa Cruz after Puerto Santa Cruz which was its former capital. Rio Gallegos became the capital in 1888. Several Europeans countries immigrated during the 19th and 20th century when news spread in the continent about a gold rush. The province of Santa Cruz was awarded provincial status within Argentina in 1957. The thriving mining industry revolves around gold, especially the Cerro Vanguardia Mine, clay, gypsum, salt and many other minerals and metals. Sheep are significant to the economy of Argentina with Santa Cruz producing maximum wool and meat after the production taking place in the province of Chubut. Most of the sheep derived products made in Argentina is exported to other countries. The flourishing fishing industry is based at the ports of Puerto Deseado, Puerto San Julián, Puerto Santa Cruz and Río Gallegos in the country. There are several species of prawn, squid, hake and other marine animals hauled up from the ocean. While large amounts of seafood are consumed locally, much of these species are frozen and exported to other countries. There are a number of tourist attractions in Santa Cruz including the Los Glaciares National Park and several glaciers among which the Perito Moreno Glacier is fairly well known. The El Calafate Airport is an important point of transport for foreigners and locals in the country. This airport links the province of Santa Cruz with Buenos Aires and Trelew. The village of El Chaltén serves as a wonderful tourist attraction for those who are interested in different trekking tours. These include guided tours of  the Viedma Glacier and other nearby glaciers in the province. Another popular place is Cueva de las Manos close to the town of Perito Moreno where you may see prehistoric wall paintings in the caves in the proximity of the Pinturas River. Historians estimate that the art here dates from 13000 to 9000 years ago.

Viedma Glacier

Part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the Viedma Glacier is a large glacier situated in the southern section of the mainland South America. It is a valley glacier and possesses a moraine-rich terminus that flows into the western end of the beautiful Lake Viedma which is, which is fed by this glacier. It is situated in the Los Glaciares National Park which became a World Heritage Site in 1981.

Del Desierto Lake

The gorgeous Del Desierto Lake is present within the Lago Argentino Department of the province of Santa Cruz Province in Argentina. This lake is close to the Fitz Roy Mountain and the O'Higgins/San Martín Lake which offer many recreational opportunities.
