About Faroe Islands

Located in the Northeast Atlantic, the Faroe Islands comprise 18 small islands, characterised by steep cliffs, tall mountains, narrow fjords and a population of 50,000. The Faroese language derives from Old Norse, which was spoken by the Norsemen who settled the islands 1200 years ago. Through the centuries, the Faroese have defied the harsh nature and living conditions. Enduring today is a nation in which the living standard is one of the highest in the world. A highly industrial economy mainly based on fisheries and aquaculture continues to flourish, while a Nordic welfare model ensures everyone the opportunity to explore his or her own potential. Faroese maritime expertise is widely renowned and the Faroe Islands export seafood to all six continents.

Positioned strategically between Europe and North America, the Faroe Islands are only a couple of hours’ flight from the metropolitan centres in Northern Europe. Upon arrival, the scenery renders visitors a ravishing natural experience in a society with advanced infrastructure and digital networks. Centuries of relative isolation have resulted in the preservation of ancient traditions that to this day shape life in the Faroe Islands. The unique mixture of traditional and modern culture characterises the Faroese society, constituting a strong sense of local community and an active outlook as a globalized Nordic nation.

The weather is maritime and quite unpredictable. It can change quickly and it varies extremely, from moments of brilliant sunshine to misty hill fog, to showers - there can be sunshine on one side of the mountain range, while it's raining on the other side. During the summer the islands are often overcast by summer fog. The Gulf Stream south of the islands tempers the climate. The harbours never freeze and the temperature in winter time is very moderate considering the high latitude. Snowfall occurs, but it is short-lived. The average temperature ranges from 3°C in the wintertime to 11°C during the summer, the temperature can be much higher, but the air is always fresh and clean no matter the season.

It is as simple as that! Mykines is the westernmost islands of the Faroe Islands’ 18 islands! The hike from the old solitary Mykines village with turf-roofed houses to the lighthouse at the end of the the islet of Mykineshólmur is truly something special an otherworldly experience at the edge of this world. This secluded island, with its rolling hills and precipitous cliffs, has deservedly become a traveller’s favorite.

Enjoy tremendous views of the ocean to the west and other islands to the east as you walk across the island dubbed the “paradise of birds” because of its magnificent and rich bird life, including hundreds of cute puffins nestled in burrows in the clifftops during the summer months.

The rich bird life, exquisite cliffs and deep caves are, among others, what makes Vestmanna bird cliffs to one of the most popular attractions in the Faroe Islands. Sightseeing boats leave from Vestmanna and sails to Seyðskorargjógv, from where they are sailing at reduced speed in between the free-standing rocks, into the caves and close to the around 600 m high cliff sides, where the many seabirds are nesting, among others puffin, cormorant and fulmar. The sound of the seabirds, the whisper of the sea, the free-standing rocks, and the interaction between the many colours, makes the trip an experience that you will never forget!

The trip is made every day during summer time, and is estimated to be about 2 hours.

Torshavn is located on the island Streymoy and is the capital of the Faroe Islands. In addition to being the country’s largest city and largest municipality, Torshavn is also the country’s cultural, traffic and economic centre.

Torshavn is known for being the smallest capital in the world. In addition, the city is known for being a modern and vibrant city, with many cafes, restaurants, music venues and cultural gatherings. This contributes to create a cosy, close atmosphere in the small port. The old part of Torshavn is called ’Á Reyni’, where there is opportunity to experience the old black-tarred houses with grass roofs. Also, the red houses on ‘Tinganes’ are found here, where the Lawman office and other administrations are located. The trip is made every Monday from 09:00 – 12:00.

How about a nice trip to one (or several) of the lakes of Vágar? Vágar is enriched with four beautiful lakes. Among these the both the largest and the second largest lakes of the Faroe Islands, Sørvágsvatn/Leitisvatn and Fjallraven respectively. Or what about a trip to the more remote and heart shaped Vandals Vatn?

The lakes are also ideal for lake fishing as the trout stock is relatively high in the lakes. No fishing license is required for fresh water fishing in the lakes of Vágar. As always in the Faroe Islands, it is important to check the weather forecast, when you plan to go outside, also for fishing.
