About Minturno

In the south of Lazio in Italy lies the city of Minturno that is located near the River Liris. It is part of the main railway line between the cities Rome and Naples. This makes it easy to access for tourists who are arriving via international airports to these cities. The city is ancient one being part of a trio of towns belonging to the Ausones who fought against the Romans in 314BC. In modern times, the other two rebellious towns are known as Vescia and Sessa Aurunca. The town became colonized in 296BC and was ruined by the Saracens in 883. Power was exchanged between rulers for a long time until the Kingdom of Italy was founded in 1861. Until the 19th century, the ancient town was called Traetto and it was a low altitude site. Over time, the population started migrating to where the city of Minturno stands today. There are amazing historical landmarks that you can explore with guided tours. You can learn all about the various eras that the town has been through and the way of life in the old days. There are beautiful beaches where you may spend a relaxing afternoon. This is amazing feat of engineering that was designed by the famous engineer Luigi Giura. It was the first of its kind in the country and one of the earliest records of an iron catenary suspension bridge in Europe. It suffered from major damages during the War of Liberation in Italy and was subsequently restored in cooperation with ANAS. Currently, it is under the supervision of the government.

District Archaeological Minturnae

The old town was abandoned in the favor of the existing location but the ruins that are present today are absolutely fascinated. Every month, the organizers arrange free guided tours of the Real Ferdinando Bridge on the first and third Sunday only. The Lower Lazio region is fascinating to see with your bare eye. There is a theater and museum where you can view artifacts that have been excavated from the site of the old town. The Roman Theater was established around the 1st century AD and its architecture afforded three sections that collectively accommodated 4000 spectators.
