About Sardinia

Sardinia is an Italian island in the Mediterranean Sea. It is the second largest island after Sicily. Situated in the west of the Italian peninsula, it is a popular holiday destination for tourists all around the world. It also has the French island of Corsica in the north. With the official name of Regione Autonoma della Sardegna (Autonomous Community of Sardinia), it has four regional minority languages; Sassarese, Corsican Gallurese, Algherese Catalan, and Ligurian Tabarchino, with the official language of Italian. Having Sea of Sardinia in the west and the Tyrrhenian Sea in the east, the island has plenty of relaxing beach-life as well. Considered to be one of the most ancient pieces of land in Europe, the island of Sardinia has a rich history.

It is believed that the first ones to inhabit the lands were Upper Paleolithic, and Mesolithic. The Paleolithic civilization’s existence is proved at the Corbeddu Caves and several more archeological sites. The Neolithic Revolution was introduced by the Cardinal culture from the Italian Peninsula in the 6th Millennium BC. As time passed, the different Sardinian populations united in customs but remained at war on a political basis. Around 1500 BC, villages were formed surrounding a Nuraghe (round tower-fortresses). Followed by Roman annexation and much more, the land today is a mixture of various customs, traditions, and cultures.
