Vesuvius National Park
Goethe once said once you’ve seen Naples you can die. Whether or not this is true is, of course, debatable, but what is certain is that one can’t appreciate the unique characteristics of the city or its people without taking into account that they live in the shadow of a mighty volcano. Mount Vesuvius, destroyer of Pompeii, is still active today and the Vesuvius National Park was created in part to safeguard this famous volcano. The park is also committed to promote scientific research and environmental education in this area, which is so rich in historical and geological interest. The territory of the national park has a unique natural and historical importance and produces agriculture unlike any other part of Italy.
Mount Vesuvius is located in the Campania plain and has two morphological structures, the Vesuvius Great Cone and Somma caldera. The highest point of the Somma caldera is Punta Nasone, which reaches 1,132 meters, and represents the remains of an ancient volcano, which was active more than 30,000 years ago. Valle del Gigante is a large depression that is divided by the Valle dell’Inferno and Atrio del Cavallo, which represents the inner parts of the old caldera. The great cone of Vesuvius is located within this space.
Mercato is a neighbourhood or quartiere of Naples, southern Italy. It is in the south-eastern part of the city, bounded by the industrial port of Naples on the south. At the center of the area is "Market square," the medieval marketplace of the city. At the apex of the half-moon of the piazza, is the church of Santa Croce e Purgatorio al Mercato. To the east and west respectively, on can see the belltowers and parts of the facade of Sant'Eligio Maggiore and the church of Santa Maria del Carmine. The square was the site of the execution of Conradin.
It was also where Masaniello revolt broke out and also the site of the executions after the royalist retaking of the kingdom after the fall of the Neapolitan Republic of 1799.
The area was somewhat cut off from the rest of the city, inland, by the urban renewal of the early 1900s. Also, it was severely damaged by bombings in World War II. It is currently (2006) in the midst of ambitious development.
The Volcanic Conetti Of Carcavone
Among the natural beauties of the Vesuvius area there is undoubtedly the Carcavone area , whose name derives from a very interesting quarry for volcanologists due to the sedimentation of the debris, mostly deriving from what is called "the eruption of Pollena ", In 472 AD. This site is extremely fascinating due to the flourishing presence of Vesuvian vegetation and the presence of birds of prey belonging to the Park's native fauna.
In this area some structures have been recognized that suggest the presence of ancient eruptive vents of the Somma volcano with an eccentric activity dating back to a period before 79 AD. The Conetti del Carcavone are arranged along the path along a straight line in the classic buttonhole layout and give the feeling of being inside a small volcanic mouth.
The area of the Conetti del Caracavone is managed by the Associazione Liberi Pensieri , also the protagonist of a beautiful living crib in the historic center of Pollena Trocchia .
