About Santa Susanna

It is a municipality in the comarca of the Maresme in Catalonia, Spain. It is situated on the coast between Malgrat de Mar and Pineda de Mar. The origins of Santa Susanna can be traced to the 12th century, when peasants cultivating vineyards and fields of grain crops inhabited the Alfata Valley. During the 15th and 17th centuries, the Catalan coastline underwent many pirate attacks. The residents of Santa Susanna constructed large towers and fortified their homes to protect themselves against these dangers, keeping a watch on the sea and sounding the alarm if raiders were sighted. Some of these towers still survived to present day in Santa Susanna.

Today a few traces of the medieval era remain, such as the watchtowers, the chapel of Santa Susanna and the old reinforced farmhouses. One such is Can Rosich, which now serves as rural tourist lodging. All the buildings of Santa Susanna, which represent a noteworthy share of its artistic and historical inheritance, invigorate the value of the legacy within their walls.

Plaça Catalunya, Santa Susanna

The parish church of Santa Susanna is a humble building set up during the post-war period by the hard work of all the local residents who worked without pay. In the church, the paintings in the presbytery are worth seeing. They were made by Aurelio Crosiet, a scholar of José María Sert, who studied ornamenting large spaces by painting canvases, which were covered with a fine coating of gold. The painting in the center is an allegory of the Eucharist. On the right, you can see an illustration of the martyrdom of St Susanna, while the on the left is a fantastical visualization of her entrance to heaven. The dome portrays a cloudy sky with one evangelist in each corner.

Molí d’en Jordà

This former flourmill dates back to the late 17th and early 18th centuries. It used to draw water from the Santa Susanna stream, and some of the mill building’s walls are still standing, as well as the construction of the double-arched aqueduct that directed water to the mill.

Civil War Bunker

The Civil War Bunker lies by the Platja de les Dunes beach in Santa Susanna. It was one of the many defensive structures built by the Republican town councils in the Maresme district to protect the settlement. It was also used to keep an eye out for the Majorca Nationalist forces aircraft, which were deployed to bombard Barcelona in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).

The fort was built in 1938 by the brigades from reinforced concrete and is mounted on a stone foundation. It is entered via a corridor with a small cabinet on the right. The central space has a higher platform, which was the location for a machine gun. The walls facing the Barcelona shoreline have two artillery and observation openings.

The bunker assisted in the protection of the residents of Santa Susanna from the hazard of attacks such as airborne attacks by the Italian fascist air force, who were Franco’s ally, as well as potential touchdowns by Franco’s troops. From 1937 onwards, the Republican Government and the Popular Army raised substantial defense lines along the coastline of Maresme and in the rest of Spain. Santa Susanna, then known as Montagut de Mar, had two such battlements: one larger construction, tactically positioned close to the stream and currently eroded away by the sea, beside this bunker at the Platja de les Dunes.
