The Best Time to Visit

Baton Rouge is most busy in the summer break during June and July. Louisiana’s Old State Capitol

Louisiana Old State Capitol had once been a very important building as it contained Louisiana State Legislature till 1930 when the new capitol building was being constructed. It is located in North Boulevard and overlooks the Mississippi River. It is one of the best things to do in Louisiana with the gothic style architecture inviting tourists. It is also called Castle of Rouge Baton or Castle on the River by the visitors. It is a National Historic Landmark and is also listed as U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Louisiana Art and Science Museum

Louisiana Art and Science Museum contains art galleries, science exhibition, and a planetarium. It is located on South River Road and the building is a 1925 railway station. Along with permanent exhibits entertaining visitors of all ages it also has some temporary art exhibitions. One of its more popular displays is Ancient Egypt Gallery that has a large array of medieval artifacts including an ancient mummy. For family visits especially with kids, this is the place you would want to go. The planetarium here presents sky shows and also is the venue for many films and concerts. Moreover, the museum also hosts lectures, classes, and workshops.

USS Kidd

A Fletcher- class destroyer that was launched in 1943, this ship was named after Admiral Isaac C. Kidd who lost his life during World War II, at the attack on Pearl Harbor. USS Kidd faced many battles in the Pacific during this war and also played an important role in the Korean War. Later after it was decommissioned in 1964 it was chosen, from Louisiana, as a memorial for World War II veterans.

Louisiana State Museum

Louisiana State Museum comprises nine museums which include Capitol Park Museum. The Museum has a wide range of displays that show the rich culture, art, and civilization of the city. Most of the exhibits here are temporary and only two are permanent. The exhibits try to cover diverse topics such as civil unrest, slavery, war as well as industries.

LSU Museum of Art

On the fifth floor of Shaw Center lies the infamous LSU Museum of Art. It is one of the topmost attractions in Louisiana and covers a 13000 square feet area with a total of fourteen galleries. The ceilings are fifteen foot high to accommodate media and art of any size inside. Few of the notable pieces here are Newcomb College Pottery Pieces, Chinese Jade carvings, and works of Clementine Hunter.
