The site's name comes from the name of a volcano which also resulted in three lakes famous for their colors of blue, red, and green. Visit the lakes to hike and sleep near the volcano to watch the sunrise over the crater. Bukit Lawang sets at the entrance of Gunung Leuser National Park where nature lovers can enjoy many activities like trekking, tubing on the river, or visiting the sanctuary to learn about the habitat.

For an authentic meal of Indonesia, head to Padang, the capital city of West Sumatra. Some of Padang's favorites include pounded cassava leaves with coconut milk, jackfruit curry with snake beans, and beef Rendang.
