About Chinatown DC

an entrance to Chinatown, DC

Chinatown is a small neighborhood in Downtown Washington DC. Originally, Chinatown DC was located on the south side of Pennsylvania Avenue in the Federal Triangle but was eventually moved to the H Street area.

In the past, the area was home to thousands of Chinese immigrants. Many of them lived in the Wah Luck House apartments at 6th Street NW and H Street NW. The apartment building was designed by Alfred Liu and it featured modern Chinese design motifs. Today, only 361 Chinese residents live here (according to the 2020 census).

Chinatown Community Cultural Center aims to preserve the Chinese community and promote the neighborhood as a wonderful cultural destination. They offer tours and a variety of programs that celebrate Chinese culture and heritage.

Nevertheless, Chinatown is still a vibrant place with great restaurants, bars, shops, and theaters. Also, known brands like Subway and Starbucks display Chinese characters on their storefronts.

Even though this area is small, it still offers a variety of attractions and activities. The most famous sight is definitely the Friendship Archway, a traditional Chinese gate designed by Alfred Liu. You can find it at the intersection of H Street and Seventh Street.

There’s also a Chinese Community Church ─ the oldest Chinese-American church in the Washington metropolitan area and a number of museums and landmarks only a few minutes away. Explore the National Portrait Gallery, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum and visit the Petersen House or Ford’s Theater. In the area, Capital One Arena often hosts concerts and sports events.

Nevertheless, the best time to visit Chinatown DC is during the Chinese New Year Parade. Expect to see fireworks, drum teams, traditional costumes, and dancers. For updated information visit the parade’s official website.
