Riyadh Metro Project

A fast transportation system known as the Riyadh Metro is being built in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It’s an element of the largest public transportation project, the Riyadh Metro Project, also known as the Riyadh Public Transport Project (RPTP).

Riyadh, the bustling capital, is not just a metropolis of tradition and heritage; it’s also becoming a beacon of modernity and progress.

The project is also at the forefront of this evolution, a monumental endeavor to redefine regional transportation infrastructure.

The plan consists of roughly 176 km of railway lines in the capital of Saudi Arabia, 40 percent of which are subterranean and serve as operating grounds for driverless electric trains. The metro, which has 84 stations and six lines, will significantly reduce traffic on the city’s roads.

The High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh created the plan for the RPTP. The Riyadh Council of Ministers approved the plan in April 2012. However, contracts were awarded for design, construction, and operation, leading to the commencement of construction in 2014.

Over the years, progress updates were provided, and extensive testing and commissioning took place before the metro’s inauguration in 2021. The metro system comprises six lines, serving 85 stations across Riyadh, and plans include network expansion and integration with other transportation modes.

The building of a bus network is another aspect of the RPTP project. The 85km three-line Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) network will connect major Riyadh areas. The bus network will be linked to every metro station.

The Saudi Arabian transport project, specifically the Riyadh Metro, consists of six lines spanning across the city:

  • Line 1 (Blue Line): It stretches from Al Olaya north to Al Hayer Road south. It will have 22 stations over its 38 km length and four transfer stations connecting it to other metro lines.
  • Line 2 (Red Line): It extends from Alstom Street in the west to Salah Al Din in the east, with stops at King Khalid International Airport and the King Abdullah Financial District. There will be thirteen stops and three transfer stations over 25.3 km long.
  • Line 3 (Orange Line): Stretching 40.7 km from Madina Al Munawra to Rahman Al Awal Road, it will be the longest metro line.
  • Line 4 (Yellow Line): Will pass through eight stations, a 29-kilometer route from King Khaled International Airport to the upcoming King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD).
  • Line 5 (Green Line): Will begin at King Abdul Aziz Road and run for 13 kilometers. Eleven stations and two transfer stations will be part of it.
  • Line 6 (Purple Line): Will be 21 km long, mainly above ground, with six stations. It will conclude at Prince Saad Ibn Abdulrahman Al Awal Road, having begun at KAFD.

In addition, KAFD Metro Station, Western Station, Olaya Metro Station, and Downtown Metro Station (Qasr Al Hokm) are the four main stations that will be part of the project.

The Riyadh Metro project aims to raise citizens’ quality of life and enhance transportation. Isn’t that awesome?

The project includes developing pedestrian-friendly areas and cycling paths, encouraging residents to adopt healthier and more environmentally friendly modes of transportation, reducing reliance on cars, and promoting physical activity. Also, by providing alternative modes of transportation and reducing the number of vehicles on the road, the Riyadh Metro helps mitigate air pollution, contributing to cleaner and healthier air for residents.

As part of the project, landscaping will be created around the stations to encourage the creation of a more sustainable and livable urban environment.

The metro system is designed to be accessible for people with disabilities, ensuring inclusivity and equal access to public transportation.

Intelligent Fare System

The project focuses on enhancing passenger convenience and efficiency by implementing an intelligent fare system.

Passengers will utilize a smart card to access the Riyadh Metro system. These cards can be easily obtained and recharged at designated stations or online portals. Near-field communication, or NFC, is the technology used in the contactless system.

By offering passengers a seamless and secure way to pay for their metro rides, the system enhances the overall efficiency, convenience, and accessibility of public transportation in Riyadh, further reinforcing the city’s commitment to innovation and progress.

The Riyadh Metro Station project incorporates numerous sustainable features to minimize environmental impact and promote eco-friendly transportation options.

The metro system utilizes energy-efficient trains and stations, employing technologies such as regenerative braking to reduce energy consumption and minimize environmental footprint. Moreover, some stations are equipped with solar panels or other renewable energy sources to generate electricity, decreasing reliance on non-renewable energy sources and lowering carbon emissions. Every metro station along the six lines will have electricity from renewable sources.

Furthermore, the initiative will help the city’s long-term sustainable development. The metro system will utilize Alstom’s HESOP (Harmonic Energy Saver) system, a train braking energy-recovery mechanism.

HESOP technology significantly advances sustainable transportation infrastructure, particularly in the project context. This innovative technology enables the recovery of braking energy from trains, which can then be utilized in various ways to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of the metro system. Further, the system is expected to avoid about three million kilograms of carbon emissions and deliver power savings of 6.6 million kilowatts annually.

Nadia, a local girl, says, “The Riyadh Metro represents a significant step forward in Saudi Arabia’s efforts to combat climate change. Promoting public transportation and reducing car dependency is helping to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality. “
