In Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, a skyscraper development project called Jeddah Tower, or Burj Jeddah, was formerly called Kingdom Tower. Nonetheless, project development began in 2023 following a nearly five-year hiatus.

With a height of more than one kilometer and a total construction area of 530,000 square meters, it will be the tallest structure in the world when the project is finished. Occupying 57 million square feet, the tower will include residences, hotels, and business space.

Visitors will have a fantastic experience as this tower offers unparalleled views of the cityscape below. So, this blog post explores the beauty, significance, design intricacies, and profound impact of the Jeddah Tower on the kingdom and beyond.

The Vision 2030 initiative aims to reduce the kingdom’s reliance on oil by diversifying its economy by constructing the world’s tallest tower, set to be completed by 2020.

Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture of Chicago designed the tower. After opening in Dubai in 2010, the Burj Khalifa has been the world’s tallest free-standing building. However, the Kingdom Jeddah Tower will surpass it by about 200 meters.

The $20-billion Jeddah Economic City on the Red Sea coast will have the $1.2 billion tower as its centerpiece.

The Jeddah Economic Company, the project’s developer, hopes that the tower and city will further establish Jeddah as a major international center for commerce, business, education, healthcare, and entertainment.

From its inception, the project has pushed the boundaries of what is possible in architectural design and engineering.

The Kingdom Jeddah Tower is expected to feature 167 usable floors, seven of which will be dedicated to a five-star hotel. In addition, there are 121 premium apartments on another 11 stories, and seven more will be used as offices. Housing units, a gym, a spa, cafes and restaurants, and multiple sky lobbies will occupy most of the remaining floors.

The top floor’s 660-meter-tall observation deck, the highest in the world, will be one unique feature. Building a structure of unparalleled height has many difficulties, from intricate engineering to complex logistics.

However, the project’s teams faced every challenge with perseverance and skill, revealing the global potential of collaboration and innovation.

The tower, featuring a structural design that blends technology and organic elements, will progressively take shape as the Jeddah Economic City project progresses.

The end product is a sophisticated, economical, and highly constructible design that combines traditional and innovative, cutting-edge ideas about technology, building materials, life-cycle concerns, and energy saving. With elevators that can go up to 10 meters per second, the tower will have one of the world’s most advanced tower elevator systems.

“Although the design is specific to Saudi Arabia, it shows how skyscraper architecture has evolved and improved. The design of Jeddah Tower honors its heritage in architecture by using its ancestors’ technological and design expertise to refine and advance them to unprecedented levels,” said Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill (AS + GG) Architecture.
